She is so beautiful. I can only hope that I will grow old this gracefully. And that I have that luscious grey hair.

I have read with interest your views on Rome and their way of dress. I am an Anglo Italian born in the UK, but visiting Rome regularly and living there as a working single woman in the early 1980s. I find it interesting that when in Rome I dress completely differently to when in Northern Europe. In Rome I feel no desire to look avant garde, funky or outstandingly different. I am quite happy to make the most of myself within the narrow band of bourgeois 'dolce vita' style that the climate and environment seem to demand in order to blend in with all the surrounding beauty. It's an easy comfortable way of living - sheath dress, Capri sandals, handbag all in a pretty feminine Valentino style for at least eight months of the year. But life in Northern Europe compels me to dress completely differently; it's cold, it's grey, there's a general feeling of battling with the elements which brings out in me a creative rebellious streak and I'm naturally drawn to a way of dress that reflects this: Comme, Miyake, etc. I'm sure I'm not unusual in this.

Rome and Roman culture is a unique entity in this world. The dolce vita style will never leave Rome completely. I see young women today who still have it there. They are not afraid to show their femininity; on the contrary they celebrate it. It has nothing to do with sex, as it does in the North, but everything to do with sensuality. Rome has been and always will be 'La Citta Eterna'!
