i totally understand about the flat shoes. i don’t like converse because they are unflattering on feet, and they are uncomfortable after a few hours. i prefer Tretorn, Superga, Gram, and PF Flyer sneakers. or if you want to go in a different direction, lace-up oxfords are a good way to go. my current favorites are theses comfortable rubber lace-ups by Melissa Australia. They are waterproof, so they can be worn in the rain as an alternative to chunky boots, and they are classy enough to wear to work.

TOMS are the best flats ever!
There are all different styles and colors and even a wrap boot.
And not only are they comfortable and stylish, but for every pair purchased, a child without shoes is provided with Toms as well! An awesome thing.
