costanza-pascolato

Here’s one of my fashion week stars. Constanza Pascolato from Brazilian Vogue has always impressed me. Something about her beauty, her style…

I’d never dared try to talk to her, and even less tried take her picture, but I’d always loved her style, a mix of discrete and super bold pieces, some super age-appropriate (perfectly brushed hair, precious jewels, well thought-out lengths and never too much skin…) and  some of the last pieces of the season, whether it’s Valentino studded kitten heels in every imaginable color or the last leather rockab’ jacket by Miu Miu.

And then one day, she came up to me and in the most perfect French, she says to me, “J’aime beaucoup votre blog !”

And ever since then, I’ve been much more relaxed around her and we’ve talked about tons of stuff, but mostly her outfits, things she’s wearing, and other stuff she no longer wears because it doesn’t quite fit with her age. Without realizing it, she’s teaches me quite a bit. She talks about her age really freely and with a touch of gallows-humor, like Carine Roitfeld who says that at some point, she decided to let her skirts get a little longer.

I have a huge admiration for women who have enough perspective of themselves to let their wardrobe evolve throughout each period of their lives. It’s not so much about imposing skirt length, but just keeping a ever curious and loving eye on themselves. The kind that makes life a long and fantastic adventure.

What incredible style she has! I love that jacket in the last photo . . . and also how worn her Chanel bag looks in the first photo. She’s exceedingly chic.

    Oh, Constanza is adorable!

I have interviewed to her for my shoe blog, asking how many pairs of shoes she owns. She told me she has just few, about 30 pairs… because she only keeps the most classic and comfy styles. Between her favorite brands of shoes: miu miu, prada, valentino e repetto flats… http://milpares.wordpress.com/2011/03/01/quantos-pares-voce-tem-costanza-pascolato/

I’m so glad that she inspires people over there the same way she inspires us right here in Brazil.

I really like the idea that people should dress according to their body & their age. Past a certain age, I don’t think shorts befit men or mini-skirts befit women (no matter how splendid their legs remain). She is wearing these Miu Miu jackets remarkably (though I beg to prefer Balenciaga’s parrot leather jackets!)

Thank you Garance for celebrating all the ages of women rather than a very narrow band that represents a very small portion of women in this world. Constanza is a very beautiful woman and a fine example of fabulous style at any age.

Whenever I have the opportunity to meet Constanza at Fashion Rio, I beg leave to take a picture with her and take this opportunity to say that I admire his work, which is the inspiration and example of being human to me.

you and Scott Schumann are in my blog toda, when you both came to Rio in 2010 (at Fashion Rio week).

I love how you put that: …”juste de garder un regard aimant et curieux sur elles-mêmes.” Well put. So many women instead keep a vigilant, distrustful eye on themselves, ready to squash any rebellion by the body lest it respond to the tides of time. I’ve done it myself, but this is a reminder to instead be loving and curious, respond accordingly fashion-wise, and see how one evolves. Merci beaucoup, Garance.

    Hi Garance,

I have been watching the firestorm over at the Sartorialist, I am sure you both must be talking about this…

It is very interesting and I am very glad Scott has the guts to do it, but I am feeling a bit sorry for him right now, he must be feeling a bit overwhelmed…!

Fat and old are a big deal to us Diva’s!!!

I am 47, have been in the fashion world forever, and I have been spending alot of time thinking about “age appropriate” clothing. My body is fuller, not soo slick and toned, my skin is not so firm, but DAMN!! I hate the idea that I have dress to this. I guess I do anyway, but…I sure wish there was an alternative!

@Lily: Her name is Costanza Pascolato because she is Italian. She was very young when she arrived in Brazil with her family, from Italy. Her mother founded a textile industry which became huge and very important. That’s why Costanza grew up in the “fashion system” but she keeps a detached glance over it without loosing her creativity, her sense of humour, her “bon ton”.

  • Meredith March, 29 2011, 4:53 / Reply

She is beautiful. I love the gold necklace with the belted coat in the first picture.

I feel like my style is always evolving. I used to never wear skirts – always pants. I dressed in a very 90′s minimalism way, I think, because I needed to look stronger than I felt in my early career (as an accountant). After starting my blog, I’ve wanted to wear much more feminine items – probably because I feel more secure in who I am and what I’m doing.

Just re-read this post. I love this so much:

“I have a huge admiration for women who have enough perspective of themselves to let their wardrobe evolve throughout each period of their lives. It’s not so much about imposing skirt length, but just keeping a ever curious and loving eye on themselves. The kind that makes life a long and fantastic adventure.”

    Perfectly put, Garance. :)
