nail-polish

For the most part, in terms of nail-polish, a blueish red is enough to make this girl happy*.

Problem is that it starts chipping and I haven’t a second to get to the nail bar**, and I end up being that nervous girl hiding her nails during an important meeting when I’m supposed to be passing for a Perfectista***.

So to overcome my maintenance problems this spring, I’ve got a new idea:

The nail-polish in the photo. I love it!!! Unfortunately, these sublime hands don’t belong to yours truly, and the person to whom these most sublime hands belong totally forgot the name of the nail-polish color.

Some would call it nude, but its color is more subtle than that. That’s why I’ve decided to call it Brilliant Granny, seeing as they make me think of the beautiful and somewhat strange colors that grandmothers were wearing before they started wearing neon nail-polish just like everybody****.
And brilliant because I think it’s gotta last a lot longer than a red that self-destructs in three days. And when it does start to chip, I don’t think you’ll really notice.

This’ll be good for the special low-maintenance post***** that I’ve got simmering on the back burner for you******.

So here’s a long post to say…. absolutely nothing at all. But perhaps to ask you three questions :

Do you have any idea where to find Brilliant Granny nail-polish?
Can you venture a guess as to whom these hands belong?
Don’t you think this lion ring is just the cutest ever?

———–

* Like Forever Yummy or Essie – Oh, I just love the names of nail-polish.

** I gotta add though, that whenever I get one of those spa menus in front of me, I just start getting everything possible, all the weirdo massages and out I go, three hours later, late and in various states of disrepair.

*** Perfectista, yep, you know who I’m talking about : The perfect woman with even skin, eternally shiny nails and socks that always match –even the sports socks.

***.2 : Ha, seriously, is there anyone out there that would believe that I’m a Perfectista with everything I put on here everyday? I mean c’mon!

***.3 : Oh, I know what you’re going to say, WHAT ABOUT NAIL-POLISH REMOVER? Well. Every time I go on a trip and bring nail-polish remover, it explodes all over my suitcase. So… NO NAIL-POLISH REMOVER.

**** I mean really now? You can’t even be (more or less) young and rebel (more or less) by wearing neon nail-polish. Too bad.

***** low-maintenance = the absolute minimum necessary beauty things to do for those of us too lazy to do anything more.

******  But I’m too lazy to get this one together.

Garance – I couldn’t agree with you more. I’ve put my red on the shelf for a while in favour of two new shades from American Apparel: a grey colour called Mouse and “Brilliant Granny” colour called Mannequin.

p.s. Now where can I get a lion ring? I’m a Leo and I think I need one.

hi Garance! I use OPI’s Tickle My France-y which works very well too – a light pinkish biege. Makes your nails look naturally healthy and shine!

I always rely on Mademoiselle by Essie (or Sugar Daddy) when traveling, for the exact reasons you mention. If you still want to go red: nailpolish remover pads are suitcase friendly!

Okay, first off, get some Cutex nail polish remover pads in flat little foil packets for travel. No mess and no fear of explosion! The fabulous Granny polish looks similar to one by Rescue Beauty called Starfish Patrick. It’s quite sheer but over a white base coat, it looks creamier. So that’s #2. third, have you tried a CND Shellac manicure? They promise two weeks without chipping! I got one before my 2-week trip to Italy and my nails looked just-polished glossy the whole time. And they dry in seconds, so no smudging your polish reaching for your wallet or putting on shoes. I had mine done at Jin Soon Salon. It takes no longer than a regular manicure (though it costs $40-50) and it comes off with regular polish remover. My nails were in better shape afterwards– harder and no splits.

That said, I just bought a bottle of Chanel Mimosa–bright lemon yellow polish! Bring on Le Printemps, tout suite!

I understand the idea: to have something which is effortless and still looks great. Although with nailpolish is hard. Nailpolish is not for lazy people :P You need to take care of it.
Also, I find it interesting how there are all colours and nuances which imitate the natural colour of the nails. Why imitate natural colour if you have it right on your fingernail? If you do nailpolish do it red/black/blue/brown/(with all the nuances),etc, etc. Nailpolish is a statement!

Number 1. That nail polish color is even worse when it chips off. You feel like everybody is thinking “this girl wanted to be smart and put that kinda invisible nail polish to fool us. But we do see that she is lazy, oh she really is”.
Yep, you feel lazier because you didn’t even dare to try a bold color. And now it’s chipping too and you feel like you have nenon arrows pointing at you fingers. And your laziness.
    Terrible.
But I do love that color too (I achieve it with three coats of beige transparent polish for the French manicure) and I fall into the laziness trap every single time…

Number 2. They do sell wipes of nail polish remover! For travelling they’re amazing! I discovered them in Italy, at Kiko, but I bet you can find them also somewhere else! I’m pretty sure Sephora has them.

Number 3. You’re not a Perfectista and we love you especially because you remember us everyday that you can be awesome even without being one ;-)

    kiss

I think it is Chanel! I have the same one. That is exactly how I would describe it, it is vintage and sweet, reminds me of my grandmother. It is pretty without making your nails look void of life, like some colours right now do. I’m thrilled you noticed this! Thanks Garance. You are a dream.

I’m a big fan of Chanel’s Ballerina polish for this look—you can do one coat for very sheer, two for nude, and three for..I never get to three, actually. I wear it every day, and for parties, I go for something more “exciting” with Chanel’s Django, which is basically the same color with a little shimmer—also very subtle, and never shows up when chipped. My friends make fun of me for never doing anything more exciting than nude, but my hands always look great!

a natural, glossy colour is the best for all those people like you and me that are busy bees!

I love colours but with tapping on the keyboard, the mobile, when you do the dishes or wash your air, well, colours just last 1 day!!

sometimes I only use the ‘stronger nail’ which give your nails a polished look (just keep it very well filed).

what I cannot live without are toenails that have always be coloured at any season!!

Just go to a salon (for half an hour, not any longer! ;)) and look at the bottles Garance, I’m sure you can find something similar! Tons of brands are producing this color so I’m sure Essie has something similar too, if you prefer them over OPI :).

I know, I love nude colours for nailpolish! I just ordered a bunch from this page: http://www.eyeslipsface.com
There you do not only get an extreme wide range of nail-polish, but it is extremely cheap! For only one dollar per flask you would think they did not have a very good quality, but you only need two layers (as you need with almost any other nail polish) as the brush is really great. Quality for such a little price! <3

Garance, this is what you do: buy the color when you get your nails done. Get a good topcoat too. Then, for the next week after your mani give yourself another coat of color here and there, concentrating on the tips where the chipping starts. Follow with a top coat when you have time. With these little touch ups, you should be able to get a least a week out of a mani (as long as no one looks too closely!). I find the nude is a little TOO Granny, too plain Jane.

I think the trick is finding a shade that works with your skin tone. I’ve seen beiges that look great on someone else, but don’t work on me at all. I think our coloring is similar, though–dark hair, pale skin–so you might try Sally Hansen’s Complete Manicure in Nude Now. With a base and a top coat, it actually stays on longer than either OPI or essie.

Oh, Garance, I can’t believe I am going to give YOU a tip! :) Next time you are in the UK, head to Boots drug store and pick up their nail polish remover pads. First, they are inexpensive and are the best nail polish removers I have ever used: one little pad is enough to remove 10 nails’ worth of pale polish or 5 nails’ worth of dark; they smell nice, not chemically and overpowering; they improve the condition of your nails; best of all, they come in a very tiny, very light little pot and, because they are pads and not a liquid, they NEVER leak! Yay!

I stock up on them every time I am in London– I buy out the entire supply and ‘import’ them back to Canada in my luggage. (I even give them as gifts to my other travelling friends!)

Now, if someone can just tell me how to travel without my NAIL POLISH leaking in my luggage, I’ll be all set! ;)

    Garance,

You have to find out about Shellac Manicures. It is special polish that sets with ultraviolet light and last about 2 weeks. It is wonderful, doesn’t chip, stays shiny all the whole two weeks. You do need to have it taken off at the salon (acetone soaking process). Give it a shot.

    Garance,
One of my favorites to keep my nails from chipping as well as to have them look clean and natural is Essie Vinyl Bikini. It’s a very sheer white in the bottle and “almost” nude on. LOVE IT!!

With all of the neon and dark colors of polish out there, it seems a little rebellious to go “au naturel” on my nails. It’s much easier with children, too.

Hello! Actually, I just got a manicure done for the first time in awhile and I chose a color similar to that. It was OPI’s Coney Island Cotton Candy. It looks wonderful against tan skin as well. Just very clean and airy. The woman doing my nails kept asking me if I was sure, and I think it was because it’s simple. But that’s how I am. Simple and elegant. I have no inkling as to whose hands those may belong to, but they are dainty :)

    xo! have a wonderful day!

I know it isn’t nude but I love Chanel’s Vamp! It is so dark red that when I bring it into the nail salon the lady always looks at me funny because she thinks it is a goth color and I am not a goth dressing type of girl. I think it just reminds me of another era.

France! You must try the Shellac manicure! They cure it under a light to dry it and it lasts for weeks. But I mean actual weeks, not like 10-day color that lasts an hour. Right now I am on week 2 of no chips. I can wash dishes with it! It will grow out to an embarrassing point before it chips or scratches. You must try it…in red!

OMG I agree with you a hundred percent. Even with nail polish remover (even the travel and office friendly wipes) if I try to remove Red colour by myself I always end up with some left over colour in the corners of the nail bed that make my fingers look very bad.

And chipped nails at a business meeting make me forget the subject of the meeting and spend the whole tie artfully hiding my hands (under note pads, behind a piece of paper etc)

So I have resorted to OPI Sugar Daddy and Passion both end up with that cafe au lait effect… Actually I have it on right now and even chipped it still looks ok!

I love how you always read my mind.

Nailpolish remover while traveling: get the remover wipes! They won’t spill in your bag; they’re light; they’re super portable. You can keep them in all of your purses; in your office; everywhere.

  • Corrin April, 6 2011, 10:45 / Reply

Nail polish remover pads don’t explode, but if the little packets get wet they sort of melt and the pads dry out. I always keep them in their own plastic ziplock bag in my travel bag.

Subtle nail polish like that makes me even lazier than dark polish because I don’t have a constant reminder to touch us every time I look at my hands!

AU NATURAL by ESSIE. Similar to the one in your photo, but hipper as it has a bit more taupe in it. and ask them to only apply one coat to keep it light. That’s always my trick, as I always run out of time to go every week. Or sometimes I use BALLERINA by Chanel. More pink but wears really well when it chips. ONE COAT PLEASE!!

I am eternally looking for the same ever-elusive color. But as for the chipping problem, I just visited a nail salon in Nolita called Valley that offers partial-gel polish. I had my nails done 3 weeks ago and they are still literally perfectista. I don’t know if this polish will ever come off. It’s a permanently perfect manicure.

OK — i don’t know if someone already mentioned this in the comments but i always keep the little felt nail-polish remover pads handy! it’s like one little piece of felt in a sealed package and its so soaked with nail polish remover that one pad does all ten nails. SO CONVENIENT. cause i allllwayyyys forget to take my chipped polish off AS SOON AS IT IS CHIPPED (which is obviously when we should take it off) and then have a meeting or audition and don’t have tiiiime to take it off cause i’m always so so so close to being late (taxis are a girls BFF).
i’ll do it in the cab on the way to a meeting and then when i get there i just wash my hands and put on a scented hand cream to cover up the smell if it lingers!

Garance, for a mani that lasts for up to two weeks staying perfect–yes, PERFECT FOR TWO WEEKS–you should try a shellac mani! I’d love to see you write a post on that!

Essie has the most amazing nude colours…ballet slippers and mademoiselle are great! I’m sure you already know about nail polish remover pads…but if you don’t…you can get them in most drugstores and they come in little packs like towelettes and you can just throw a couple in your suitcase to take off any chipped nailpolish. No spills!

    love you!

    Bonjour Garance,

I have the same/or very similar nail varnish and love it! As you said, it is very low maintenance and even if I haven’t got time for a new manicure it still looks great after 5-6 days. Mine is from the brand called 17, I get them at Boots stores (but I live in London so not sure if you can get them in New York, who knows, maybe?) and it is called Forever which is probably a good name for it :D

    Hey Garance,
I love nude nailpolish..like you mentioned it looks great even if it does come off.
It makes for such a fresh and put together look. For someone who’s on a tight budget (like me :) – it’s great to get these nudish color nailpolishes that also strengthen your nails -> 2 in 1..
usually I go for peachy colors like the one in your picture but just recently I got myself a rosé tinted one.
    love.

I’m a hand therapist treating other peoples hands all day and I have found it extremely hard to keep colored polish looking nice. I recently used Essie My Way which is a subtle pink nude and it worked great! My best friend calls me OLT for my ” old lady tendencies” so I guess that’s why I gravitated to the Grannie look!

    voili.

I am super low-maintenance with my nails. If I want to dress them up I use a sheer nail polish pen! That way I can touch anything up without messiness and prolonged dry time. It gives them just enough shimmer to look loved without me worrying about chips. I really love neon red with a white tee and dark skinny jeans but by the end of my day it’s obliterated, so I keep stuff like that for my toes only.

As you actually live in New York, you have to make an appointment at “Rescue Lounge” because Ji Baek, the owner, is the queen of long lasting polishes.

This looks like Dulche De leche by OPI. Also comes in OPI Axxium, which lasts for 2-2 weeks and I am totally addicted to! Nail polish used to not stay on my nails and they looked horrible, but now I always get compliments and they feel so pretty. It doesnt damage my nails, you just need to be careful with your nails if you end up peeling it off at the end (I do this all the time even though you are supposed to have them remove it for you!). You definitely need to try it.

  • Davidikus April, 7 2011, 5:19 / Reply

Firstly, imvho, a year or two of observing nude on fashionists of all sexes make me think that real “nude” should be avoided at all cost: it never really matches the skin, yet is too close to make an effect (a bit like wearing really navy blue & black or two “blacks” which have aged differently does not work)…

Secondly, I am tempted to think that all nail varnish chips out eventually, no matter the colour. Only the “French manicure” is easy to deal with: when it chips out, any mending is invisible.

Thirdly, why don’t you buy nail varnish remover packaged to travel well? Ask at the chemist, they’ll have one in plastic bottles, with secure tops. You can always put it in a separate, resealable, small plastic bag…

Just my two pennies worth: I might be entirely wrong about all of this, obviously & as always!

It lasts and lasts even through hair washing!! It is Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure. I read about it in a magazine & it lives up to the hype. I hear the removal is a little tedious so you’d probably need the manicurist remove it for you when you go in for another manicure but it might be the solution to the embarrassing chipping we all hate! Let us know how it goes if you try it! cheers!

These hands are beautiful and this colour looks very good. I should know beacause I am obsessed with beautiful nails and I am always looking for the perfect nail polish colour. But somehow I can never use light tones for too long.

the quick and dirty trick to chipped nails is a marker. Used to have a black marker in my draw at work – and used if my chanel nailpolish in dark blue chipped. you as an illustrater must have markers in all the worlds colors.

and concerning the color of the nails on pic. its wonderful – but each person need to find the perfect – it depends on the skincolor and you even need one for summer vs winter.

Look at butter nail polishes from the uk. Beautiful colors including some sexy subtle ones, relatively chemical free, and it goes on so smoothly that I can even give myself a beautiful manicure. And I take it with me to my nail appointments and the technicians love it!

Hands down the best…no pun intended!

Idyllic from Spa Ritual is an amazing natural nail color! It just leaves your nails looking like glass, and they look very clean and healthy. My fave “nude” nail color hands down!

  • hgtice April, 10 2011, 1:23 / Reply

Garance, here’s a “low maintenance” tip:

Gel nail polish. It stays on for a minimum of two weeks and looks oh so “perfectionista.”

I get my done as a french manicure or with a nude cream color so it lasts even longer.
A bonus: there’s no annoying wait time after you get them done. In, brush, out. You don’t have to worry about denting your new polish when you roam around in your large bag.

Find a salon that offers gel polish. The search is worth the low maintenance yet chic look.

It’s so funny that I just read your post. I was in a store and I noticed that this girl had the BEST nail colour! It was similar the above, but more bright? It looked like a orange-toned white almost. Very like pure peachy. Or like Peach Sorbet! I should have asked her where she got it because later I went to SEVERAL salons/stores looking for that colour and cannot find it!!! Wish me luck on my search!

    Hi Garance,
have you tried prolonging your mani with a shatter topcoat? works on a-bit-chipped 3-day paintworks as well and adds about two more days of wear;)

    Garance,

there is a brasilian brand called Impala, and there is a shade called fitilho, looks exactly like this one, seriously. now the best part – all of them cost about 1euro (no, there is no zeros missing) and last FOREVER, great quality. next time you’re in Rio you should check it out!

I get the UV/gel polish that lasts 2 weeks! NO chipping! It’s awesome. The only bad thing – it doesn’t come off with regular nail polish remover – it has to be 100% acetone. But I was able to easily peel it off after 2 weeks when it was somewhat grown out.

If I have a regular manicure or paint my nails it lasts about a day, so now I get a 3 week manicure using BioSculpture coloured gel. OPI and Jessica also offer a similar gel product. If you go to a good nail salon they get all the latest shades and it really does last 3 weeks until it is soaked off and you get them repainted. My nails actually grow too instead of splitting which is an added bonus! Love the site by the way!

Greetings from Hong Kong! Just came across this post when I searched nail polish.
Have you heard of the MUJI store? (I think they have stores in America) They have got nail polish remover in a tissue form, packed in zipped tiny bags so people can bring them everywhere. because I’m kind of a Perfectionist hahaaa that everytime the polish is ruined, I want to remove it immediately. Although this post was far from 2011, hope this can help just in case you still have not find a way to bring nail polish remover. bless (:
