celine-shoes

Among all of Phoebe Philo’s misdeeds, these shoes are maybe the one that annoys me the most : I love them.

Not only do I love them, but Céline carries them over from one season to the next, and all my friends who have them can’t stop telling me how comfortable they are.

The problem ?

They don’t suit me, like, at all.

It’s a foot thing. Shoes with such an imposing wood sole, when you are a size 40 – it makes an awful lot of wood. It’s like each time I’ve tried them on, I’ve felt like I was carrying two tree trunks at my feet. Very elegant.

And try them on I have, believe me. I’ve tried them the first season they were out (“What an awesome pair of shoes, let’s buy them as soon as possible. Hey but… Why do they looks so ugly on me ?”), when they went on sale (“Huuuuum, maybe 40% less of the price will make them fit better ? Mmmmmm… No.”), when they issued a slightly different model (“There you go ! I am sure they designed this one for all the girls like me ! Oh, actually… Still not.”) and also, with a friend, in order to make sure I was not totally crazy with my foot thing (“Oh gosh Garance, you’re right, I can totally see the two tree trunks at your feet ! Definitely don’t buy them. Wait, maybe let’s see if it’s different on me !!! Miss, do you have a size 38 ? Thank you ! Oh, look, you were right ! On smaller feet it’s totally cute ! Love it ! Hey… Would you mind if I bought them ?).

So here. Just for you, a picture of those shoes, in a size 38, and in green, which is one of the latest releases, and happens to be my favorite color.

Stay calm, Garance, stay calm.

Haha… How I understand you being a size 39 myself. Plus, I think I’m too tall to wear these shoes. I’d probably be almost 2m tall with them on…

I know your pain! I am a size 40 as well. And certain shoes just do NOT lok good on my feet. I comfort myself by thinking of all the shoes that *do* flatter my feet.

  • jicky October, 7 2011, 9:51 / Reply

Yeah . . . I so know how you feel since I carry a pair of size 40 feet with me wherever I go! Best to forgo something that doesn’t work . . . even if you love them on the shelf!

I totally understand the problem. I would love to wear those military boots every hip girl in europe has, but in 41, not so cute.

I’m 5″9/1.76 m but the height thing in previous comments doesn’t bother me though (although with really high heels I’m still ‘only’ 1,90 m :P).

  • Anne Chic and Geek October, 7 2011, 10:49 / Reply

    Oui reste calme, Garance !
    Bisous

Like Jan and Silvia above, I too have proportionally small feet (37.5) for my big ol’ body. So forget a heel height more than 2 1/2 or 3″ as it leaves me on my tippy-toes, with very little actual foot on the ground. Shoe designers tend to forget proportions of feet when attaching heels! And forget about boots, unless they’re as stretchy as a pair of worn-out Spanx – my calf proportions don’t line up with my wee feet.

The grass — and apparently the Celine platforms — is always greener…..

I am a French 38 shoe size and I tried on the CELINE shoes the first season they came out. I had the same reaction as you. They just did not look good on my feet..I felt like a circus performer on stilts… But I do admire them on other women…They just don’t look good on me.
Plus I am such a clutz, I would fall down and break my ankle in them. I take falls even in flat shoes…beware of ballerinas, baby. They almost killed me.

Can I agree with you? When I was working in New York some of the ladies at my workplace were all wearing these fabulous shoes! I was like “have to have!” so I went in the search for the perfect-o pair! Sadly, you do look like Herman Munster or Frankenstein’s monster when you have large yet beautiful feet. Oh well, I still secretly want a pair as well ;)

Thank you, welcome to my life. As a size 42 (US 11, sort of, cause they usually feel squished in a 42) (at 6′ tall), there is no shoe like this that will not resemble a redwood on my foot. Marni, forget it. And the sad thing is, most of the time, I cannot even find a 42, which is kind of small anyway. A special kind of torture for tall fashionistas. And I thought the designers liked us! :(

Screw shoes proportions! I wear a 40 size too and at a certain point I had to face that life is too short to wear only shoes that look good in my size: they just don’t exist! No shoes are originally designed to look the best on a 40 size proportion, 38 is always the referrement.
I just had to get over it… and now I wear whatever I like!

I have the exact same problem. I too, am a 40 in shoes and it makes all the difference. I think the important thing is to come to terms with the acceptance that though something may look great on someone else, it may not necessarily work for us. I’d rather come to terms with that, than walk around with two tree trunks on my feet.

I am a size US 7.5 but for some reason my feet are too WIDE(coupled with a high arch) for many of the shoes I desire! Anything delicate and with straps is an absolute no on me. My feet, which fit fine in sneakers and ballet flats, are difficult divas in many, many heels. This being said, have you considered shoe as art? Or would it be too hard to see them on display?

There are so many shoes that look awful on size 40. I am size 40 also, and we can’t wear any semblance of Birkenstocks or platform shoes like this. There has to be some kind of incline on the heel to hide the sheer LENGTH of our feet! Haha! Oh well. x

I think that one day in many years to come, you’ll look back on pictures of people wearing those shoes and you’ll be pleased that you didn’t get them. They’ll be like looking back on people wearing enormous platforms in the 70′s, that when they look back now, they can’t believe that they wore such things! I’m sure you’ll be pleased Garance…you will. So now I think you can say that maybe it’s a lucky thing that you’re size 40, non? Do you feel better now?…you don’t? Oh well, I tried!

Puisque tu me demandes mon avis !

Just take them to the shoe repair and ask to have the sole being cut 1cm, it will make them look less heavier in you without changing the desing too much ;-)

41′s here. It is such a pain! I have a wardrobe full of shoes that either look strange on my feet or make me a GIANT! I have resolved to wear divine ballet’s all year!

I have the same problem. I live in scandinavia and the girls here are all about their flatforms. Despite being tall and elegant, they all have relatively small feet, that look cute in all shoes. Somehow my 165 cm frame ended up with size 40′s and I end up looking like I’m dragging blocks of wood/rubber/brick on my feet. One of many complaints I have of the unfair perfection of scandinavian girls…

  • lauren October, 8 2011, 9:16 / Reply

yes! I wear a 41/42 dear Garance and decided in 2003 not to wear shoes with massive amounts of platform/chunky heels.

It’s sad at times because they are oh so tempting, but then I actually put them on and my feet become the definition of clodhoppers!

No, like it or not, I stick to high heels, kitten heels, and well carved wedges or sexy stacked heels.

sigh. we must work with what we’ve got, non?

  • esikazemese October, 8 2011, 9:18 / Reply

Oh I feel your pain! Im size 39-40 as well. This chunky trend is soooo not for me, not only because of my big foot which i love btw, but i have EXTRA THIN ankles with them. No really, i can close my fingers around my ankles, thats right. So i have the wooorst effect with the big feet hahaha
The other turn off, when you see a gorgeous pair of high heels, and than its a trump in your size? And the heels have to be superhigh to make it look nice with size 40, and thats the height i just can’t walk in anymore! Awesome :D
I share your pain Garancé, belive me.

oh yes. and I just discovered BUTTER shoes.
they run large, are made in Italy, and very reasonably priced. they are also quite feminine– and I can’t remember the last time I wore a 10 1/2 (my size in their shoes) that fit so well.

For ladies with wide and/or big feet, they make your tootsies look oh so pretty :)

Ah yes, my problem too! I just moved here and to my surprise, barely anyone makes a size 41 (a normal size in the States). 35… 41.

someone once told me heels (4″ or above) looks great on girls with size 39 and 40, cuz smaller feet look like having foot binding in them. but still it does not make me happier, cuz i also wanna look good in flats!
even my mum said my size 40 ballet flats looks as large as dragon boat…. sigh…

Garance please don´t go nuts over these shoes, you are such a hilarious, gorgeous woman! You really don´t need them. Because these shoes are just.. bad.

I´m always skeptical about platforms because they make the feet of any woman look like..well..treetrunks. They might look good when you stand in front of them, but from the side.. oh well..walking treetrunks. One of those fashion phenomenons no man ( and me for that matter ) understands. Hideous. Stay as far away from them as you can and instead treat yourself to some nice, elegant Stilettos

Nice shoes! Nice color! I bought a similar one this summer from a small boutique, but it was not Celine. My size is 7 1/2 and the shoes I bought was white. I do agree with you that this kind of shoes don’t look good on bigger size because this kind of shoes will make your feet look a little bit of bigger. Also, I think this kind of shoes will look better on the people who have longer legs. I don’t think I have a pair of longer legs and my white shoes don’t look good on me either.

Mixed feelings, though not “aesthetically” easy to digest:)!I have seen so many of those around Buenos Aires…(last year it was all clogs here and now it’s about platforms) that I got used to them. Now I’dont know if I like them or if custom/habit made my fashion tastes change. It happens…But…You look good in stilettos…and they are so much more “chic”……that I would stick to them…if you can still walk on those. I wonder how you manage..:)! Second Point:)! Never never match them with skinny jeans, they look awful….try them with flare pants, jeans..it makes a wide difference, I still don’t know the reason why….! I have a picture of my mother wearing those or some of the kind during my baptism…should send them over! She is pairing the m with a late seventies jumpsuit pata de elefante! Great week Garance!
