It’s quite 50′s I think..I remember my grandmother wearing dresses with that shape, they combined comfort and elegance. Personally speaking I like the second one more, you know for the colors and plissè, but it’s just my taste.

Je pense années 60. Je préfère les robes à l’esprit vintage que le vrai vintage de ces années là, elles sont beaucoup plus confortables et les matières et les coupes sont plus adaptées à notre vie. Celles-ci sont très mimi.

I have a similar vintage dress in my wardrobe but every time I pass it on, I feel rediculous… Maybe it’s because it’s stlight longer and looser as well. I went to shorter it but I can’t bring myself to cut such a beauty!

J’en ai une Marc by Marc Jacob comme ça, bleue.
beaucoup de mal au début, une robe longe pas l’habitude, mais maintenant je l’adore, ses plis, sa merveilleuse taille, ses petits boutons, tout!
Et qu’est ce qu’elle est classe, même avec des converse aux pieds.
bien que l’esprit de la robe bleu soit très années 40, je dirait que c’est une robe des annés 80.

Je n’ai aucune idée pour la robe de Cécile que j’adore.
Pour ce qui est de l’autre je trouve que l’on ne peut pas faire des coupes vintage avec des imprimés vintage. Je m’explique, les deux pris à part fonctionnent super bien j’aime la coupe, j’aime le motif mais j’ai l’impression que c’est celle de ma grand-mère quand ils sont réunis.

I would go as far back as the 20′s, since the waistline is so low. The waistline came higher and got narrower all ready in the 30′s! Search google for “20′s navy dress”. :)

Late ’30s…
At first I thought the 50s because I have some vintage clothes from my aunt that I always assumed were from then.
But then I thought that it also reminds me of the dresses in Agatha Christie movies and did a bit of research. It turns out that some of them took place as early as the 20s. So if the costumes are accurate, I agree with Heidi that it could go as far back as the 20s. It could, though, be the 30s or 40s as well.

I would place this dress in the late 20′s to early 30′s. That is based on the drop-waist, the looser fit at the real waist, the sailor influence, and the pleated skirt. By mid-30′s clothes began returning to the real waist, with a closer fit through the bodice, and skirts weren’t pleated as much and bias-cut skirts came into fashion.

Its an 80s remake of a 40s nautical theme. The slight details like the extended lapels and the large brass button reflect the slightly exaggerated sensibilities of the 80s. Actual 40s items would be subtler in detailing. In fact the 80s featured a revival of mid and early century remakes. A nostalgia for that which was contrary to the “new money” zeitgeist of the 80s, I suppose.
I want to agree with @Nad, although it pains me to think of the 80s as “vintage”. :)

There is something a bit odd about that dress. The waistline seems too low on the hip to be 30´s or 40´s. And it´s too long to be 60´s. This makes me guess 80´s, too, when there was a lot of revivals and influences from earlier decades. Pretty though, I can´t believe how hip navy has suddenly become. Who would have thought something so conservative would become so trendy!

Dresses are the way to go. I finally admitted to myself that I don’t wear shorts–they just don’t feel feminine. For years I forced it convincing myself that the right pair of shorts with the right sandals would change my mind, but it doesn’t. I can pull off neither the dressy bohemian short with blazer or blouse that Kate Moss does nor the sandals with colorful tee and shorts that Jennifer Anniston does.
I am either wearing jeans, dresses, or a bikini.

Je dirais qu’il fait années 60. Je viens juste de lire “Vintage Fashion” par Carlton Books et ce sont les années qui ont ce genre de truc sur le décolleté, au même temps qu’ils avaient des gaines aux genoux et la ceinture basse. :)

I totally agree with Nad. The navy dress is not that old–the brass buttons and cream piping give it away as 80s–the Adolpho 80s of Nancy Reagan to boot–it is just that she wears it so very, very well.
This could be the ’40 and even ’30 period. This dress is too modest to be ’50, I think. I love vintage dresses. Therefore I adore Marc Jacobs creations, also in “Marc by” issue.

I’m gonna take a gander and say the 1930′s. I say this because of the hem length and the cawl neck detail. But then again, the sailor look was very on trend in the forties and fifties as well, but that hem screams the thirties to me.
Je crois que ce genre de coupe remonte à la fin du XIXe, c’était les petites filles qui portaient ces robes. On peut le voir dans les vieux journaux, comme le Moniteur de la mode. Les femmes ont porté à leur tour le style marin à la plage dans les premières stations balnéaires. Le mieux est de parcourir les journaux et photos de l’époque. En tout cas ça reste toujours aussi élégant.
