I don’t know why but I think this is hilarious! Maybe if you have teeny tiny delicate hands it wouldn’t be so silly, but it just seems wacky to grasp such a tiny piece of paper with both hands. I love it.

This is done in Hong Kong as well. What I thought was especially surprising is that when the receipt comes out of the register, the cashier will hand you the receipt this way as well.

Avant d’entrer en réunion, on s’échange les cartes de visite…mais attention, comme tu nous l’apprends, il faut présenter sa carte des deux mains…mais ensuite il faut la déposer soigneusement devant soi sur la table de réunion & ne la ranger qu’une fois l’autre parti.
Si la première règle était facile à deviner…car par mimétisme, on essaie de faire comme l’autre, je suis tombée tête la première dans le piège de la seconde. J’ai rangé ma carte dans mon sac à main (je devrais dire, je l’ai jetée dans les méandres de mon sac à main…). Quand j’ai vu les sourcils froncés de plusieurs personnes sur moi, je me suis dit, en les voyant ranger soigneusement leur carte sur la table qu’il fallait que je retrouve vite fait cette foutue carte avant que la réunion de commence pour de bon.
Et bien évidemment, après quelques fouilles archéologiques interminables, j’ai retrouvé la carte froissée et maquillée d’ombre à paupières. Une fois en main, voilà que je réalise quand je croise le regard de son propriétaire qui va falloir la poser sur la table, dans cet état °_°. Toute cette réunion a été un long calvaire…je ne pouvais réfléchir à autre chose qu’à cette carte de visite témoin de ma négligence. Heureusement, j’ai fait une bonne présentation :-p & le client a apprécié notre travail!
Voilà pour la petite histoire.

Me croiras-tu si je te disais que cette semaine j’ai appris à la fois que j’étais le blog du mois de ELLE Belgique & pas plus tard que ce matin, que j’avais été short listée à un concours national du meilleur blog (je ss dans la catégorie fashion).Je ne suis pas très bonne dans la promotion mais je me disais que tes lectrices pourraient voter pour moi!

Other than holding your card with both hands, the way you hand it matters as well. The writing on the card must be facing the recipient so that he/she can read it straight away. Never hold it in a way that will cover your name/surname. Also, if you are of lower status of the recipient, you will extend your business card underneath the business card being extended by the recipient of a higher status.
You usually keep your business card in a leather card holder as a sign of respect for the business. When receiving the card, do not write anything on it or put it in your pocket, keep it in a proper card case.

Not because the other person is precious but to avoid touching them so it is important to take the card carefully with your two hands in between, avoiding touching either hand of the giver. There is a strong concept of status and personal space, eg not looking directly into your eyes and all the different levels of bowing depending on the relative status of the two parties. Many societies used to have something similar; bowing & cursteying were a western equivalent and in many parts of Africa, kneeling reflects relative status

This is one of the first things they teach you in Japanese class! :) And after having lived in Japan for three months, I’ll tell you– they really do pay attention to this, and expect everyone to do this whole giving-people-things-by-having-the-paper-face-them thing! People do this for everything, not only business cards– exams, documents at any office building, receipts at a store… it’s quite beautiful, actually, and aesthetically pleasing.

I’m used to doing this since I grew up in Singapore (I live in the States now), and I still feel strange if I don’t use both hands to hand someone my card.
I experienced this same delightful gesture just a few weeks ago, on my first trip to China. I immediately thought that it made the transaction feel important and appreciated, even when the cashier was moving at lightning fast speed in the Muji store.
I rewatched Je L’Aimai recently and reminded me this post. Daniel Auteuil forget his presentation cards and looks like a fool in front of his clients, i love this movie, makes me cry every time, have you seen it?

Au Japon, on apprend qu’on doit prendre soin de la carte de visite comme on prend soin de la personne elle-même.
