Weekly Update

Here are a few questions I’m gonna have to answer this week.
Maybe you can help me:

  • Can you really drink only juice all day? Or a half day? Have you ever done that?

I ended up being convinced to try to juice. Tried last week, lasted for 3 hours.

Story of my fail :

Hour 1 = Super excited, delicious juice.
Hour 2 = Super tight deadline, feeling jitery.
Hour 3 = Making myself a bowl of oatmeal.

  • Is it ok to buy a simple pair of white sneakers for 400$?

Pfff, I totally know what you’re gonna say, and it’s NO!!! and me and my good conscience will tell you you’re totally right.
But I’ll still think about them deep inside me and how my life would be much more perfect with these sneakers in it and about that neither you nor my good conscience can do anything. Unfortunately.

  • Is it ok to buy the same simple pair of white sneaker as your friend you see almost everyday? Or should you pick another color? Or no sneaker at all? Arrrh, I don’t have the guts to ask her.
  • Is it possible to make a all new wardrobe in one week?

Fashion week is upon us and, following my new year resolutions, I totally cleaned up my closet. I gave, sold, made way. My closet is so good and organized now, it’s real happiness.
Problem though : I have nothing to wear.
I need a plan. What would you do?

  • Can you totally stop smoking in one second?

I think it just happened to me. I didn’t really want to stop cause I was down to one or two cigarettes a day, which I thought was ok.
Then a friend showed me electronic cigarettes.
They’re clean*, they don’t smoke up everybody around you (it smells like nothing), it’s pretty perfect for me.
This week, I am looking for one without nicotine.
Next week, I’ll look for a cigarette without a cigarette.

  • Should I really try to go to a trampoline class?
  • In that case, how many sports bras am I supposed to layer?
  • Should I explore the possibility of a different type of curling iron?

My Stella video hair was created thanks to a special curling iron, that has two warming barrels instead of one. The haidresser told me the tool was awesome.
It’s sold at Ricky’s just around the corner.
Do you think I should try it?
Or is it just going to end up with my warming brush, my negative ions blowdryer, my professional blowdryer, my two curling irons, my straingthening iron and other curiosities in my hair accessory cemetery?

Ouuuh, I feel like I have a busy week ahead.
Because on top of aaaaaall these major questions I have… I am gonna have to work. Ugh.

Please stop smoking. my mom was a tall, model thin smoker when she was young. She now has COPD caused by this cool habit, and can barely do anything or go anywhere. The doctor says her case isn’t even to the severe stage yet. It is heartbreaking.

  • andreea January, 28 2013, 9:21

my bf gave up smoking at the beginning of the year. not gradually, he just stopped. it’s not easy: he is grumpy sometimes and hungry many times but i’m proud of him :)

get a good sports bra and you will not need several :)

    bonne chance, garance! :*

For me, it seems that buying the same sneakers as your friend nigh be a little awkward. And that is a lot of money for sneakers!!! I guess it depends on the quality, though. For getting a new wardrobe, I would first get a lot of basics and build up on the other things over time. I don’t like rushing my wardrobe because I sometimes make impulsive decisions and don’t end up wearing a lot of what I buy. Trampoline class sounds fun!

  • Cecilia January, 28 2013, 9:23 / Reply

Juice: do juice and SMOOTHIES (raw, vegan ones). But I don’t know if that still counts. Everything else, idk. Good luck!

    Coucou Garance

    Bonne semaine Garance <3

I’m always so amazed by your illustrations and writing! What software do you use for your illustrations?

  • juliet January, 28 2013, 9:27 / Reply

    Bravo pour la clope!

  • Colleen January, 28 2013, 9:27 / Reply

If I do a juice thing, I have to add special things to my smoothies- like protein powder or bran flakes or avocado (seriously! one of my lactose-free friends introduced me to this- it makes it so creamy and doesn’t taste like anything!) so that I still feel full.

  • Jolanda January, 28 2013, 9:28 / Reply

I neeeeeeed this illustration as a poster.

Ps: Sorry that this is the first thing that comes to my mind when I look at all these exasperating dilemma’s that are bothering you. I would say, go for the easy way, just buy it. Worrying costs so much more time that you could also spend on shopping for Fashion Week…

  • sylie January, 28 2013, 9:33 / Reply

no no no… no juicing all day. its a crazy idea!

  • Lucie January, 28 2013, 9:38 / Reply

  • Irene January, 28 2013, 9:42 / Reply

Nice illustration – like the fluffy jumper.

  • Justine January, 28 2013, 9:43 / Reply

PS: j’aime vraiment l’illustration!

Why not, sounds fun!

So many questions Garance! Let’s see… I know nothing about juice fasting (or cleansing, however you want to think of it). I am always amazed that people do it and survive, and everyone I know who’s done it says it’s amazing, but no amount of raving can convince me to try it. Unless maybe I was at a spa that took care of me completely and I didn’t have to deal with real life while I was doing the cleanse. As for the sneakers, well, it’s hard to just come out and say yes, but still, I’m going to do it. I have spent a ton of money on things that seem totally mundane to lots of folks, like in the case of this sweatshirt:

which, cool as it is, is just a plain grey sweatshirt. But I was madly in love with it, and to this day whenever I put it on (wearing it right now actually!) it brings me deep joy and satisfaction. And that is worth the price of it, even if the garment itself isn’t. You know what I mean? As for your friend having the same ones, who cares?! Seriously.

The only other question of your I can answer is about smoking, I totally did it from one day to the next, cold turkey, no problems. I just decided I wanted to stop and I did. I know other people have a harder time with it, I think it depends on your level of addiction obviously, but I for one had a fairly easy go of it.

    Trampolines…. no idea.

  • Rachelle January, 28 2013, 9:54 / Reply

first the girl in the illustration looks like Gwen stefani, kicks for $400 why not? if you can afford it I know I would lol. Juicing no can do I love to actually chew my food. Stop SMOKING Garance, I’m not yelling but it’s really not good for you I just care. This hits close to home, my dad almost died because if this bad habit. New wardrobe in 1 week, good luck but it’s a great challenge. Ok have to get back to work now. Passe une bonne journee Team Garance Dore.

  • E. January, 28 2013, 9:54

She looks like Gwen Stefani indeed!

  • SueM January, 28 2013, 9:56 / Reply

First of all, I am still warmed from the sound in my head of Claudine calling you “Coucou Garance”. Such a wonderful word, coucou.
Back to business, $400 for sneakers: why not enjoy the inner dialogue of yes/no/maybe so, convince yourself eventually that you WILL buy them very soon, and when you think you have finally decided, they are not available any more so pffft, was meant to be. If I sound familiar with this method it is because I am.
Juicing I understand, Juice cleanses I don’t really understand:what’s the rush with your colon, slow and steady works just as well.
As far as new clothing, see sneaker response, and if this delay method seems incomprehensible for any particular item, buy it immediately!

  • Matea January, 28 2013, 9:56 / Reply

Dear Garance, I was a smoker and almost two years ago I decided to quit this nasty habit because it started bothering me. I just said to myself, today I’ll quit smoking and I actually made it. For me it was the simplest thing I’ve ever done but now I almost can’t stand the cigarette smoke, it’s amazing how your habits can change so much…

And when it comes to those sneakers…well, just buy them if you want them so badly :)) You don’t want to be lying in a bed at night and thinking about them, wondering why didn’t you get them when you like them so much :))

  • Gravelle Erhab January, 28 2013, 9:56

Yeah, that’s exactely waht happened to me / what I did. One evening 2 years ago I was hanging out with my best friend, chatting, laughing smoking. Suddenly all the slight disgust of smoking I had gathered over the years assembled to the knowing: I dont want that no more. I killed the cig and never touched one till then. Now I really find the smoke annoying (not the smokers!!).
You should know and have in mind, that the nicotine withdrawel is actually quite easy and that quitting smoking does not mean to change your whole life. You just dont smoke anymore.

And, uhm, what is the juice drinking good for? Or say, better than just eating fruits and vegetables?

  • kata January, 28 2013, 9:57 / Reply

    - There are people who can drink only juice all day, but there are also those who can’t… so, I guess it depends if your body can take it.
    - Those sneakers are expensive, but when I want something I usually cannot take my mind of them, as long as they are within my budget otherwise I forget. Now, if you have the means, go for it even though your friend has them too :)
    - I do not know if it is possible to make a all new wardrobe in one week, but I can definitely double the volume of mine during this time… haha
    - I hate smoking, and I think it’s bad for you, you should be glad that you are able to stop right away.
    - Trampoline sounds fun… So Sarah Jessica Parker :))
    - Don’t buy a new curling iron if you know you are not going to use it.

  • Maddy Marcel January, 28 2013, 9:59 / Reply

This is such a perfect Monday morning post ….! In order, then, my 2c.
    * I could never exist on juice alone.
    * I am suspicious of white sneakers at any price. But you have great taste, perhaps these are the sneakers
to change my footwear life? Picture?
    * For someone with such fantastic taste as you, it is totally possible to d a new wardrobe in a week. Easy!
    * Well, my grandfather quit smoking in one second, after two packs a day for 20+ years. Hard, but can be done.
    * Trampoline class?? Sure, why not. Sadly, can’t help with the sports bra question …
    * Your hair looked great in the Stella video, get it!

OK, now somebody help me handle my issues for the week … ;)

Electric cigarette bad, my sister tried them, disaster. Anything you can buy from a shady mall kiosk, bad.

Sounds like a lot of fun, try it!!

A great fan of yours! Unfortunately I’ve no answers to your questions but I think you should definitely check this Banana diet craze (from Japan) out:

Sounds mad crazy but I heard from my friends that this actually works wonders.

  • Stelda January, 28 2013, 10:08 / Reply

Si ton amie a les mêmes, en revanche, no way!

I miraculously did a one-day juice fast, using my own fresh juices. I would never have made it if I hadn’t publicly committed to it along with another blog/health freak friend on Twitter. The other reason I made it through the day is because I had EIGHT juices and two GTs Raw Kombuchas, as opposed to the dismal six juices most “pro” juice companies prescribe. Uh, 128 ounces of liquids are not enough to get this Greek appetite through an entire day and 60 minutes of hardcore interval training!

    You just need more juice!

  • ines January, 28 2013, 10:15 / Reply

You are too funny. Well, I’m in your boat with the fashion week outfits. I have nothing to wear. I keep getting ideas and then I’m like- that’s great but I own nothing of those sorts so what pieces do I buy first. Can’t wait to hear all your conclusions to your weekly tasks.

  • Nadia January, 28 2013, 10:20 / Reply

On my line of expertise – juicing for a day is perfectly safe, I’ve done it for a couple of days. The problem is you feel really really hungry at least up to day 3, then you start feeling nothing at all :)))

Even a little bit of smoke is bad for you… so here is the positive side of quitting smoking – http://natureinsider.com/2013/01/the-health-benefits-of-quitting-smoking/

The trampoline is the yes-yes according to most health specialist, because your lymph can’t pump by itself, so it needs you to shake it (jumping is the best possible way). That way all of the precious nutrients from your juice fast or oatmeal will reach its destination :))

  • jussilva January, 28 2013, 10:20 / Reply

  • Yolanda January, 28 2013, 10:20 / Reply

Garance, darling, would you do a favor to your hair (and to you??)??
STOP with this persecution mania (do you have that expression in english??) to your hair!!
You’ve got a beauuuuutiful curly hair in a beautiful face with big, nice and intelligent eyes and a wonderful smile!!!! And a big sense of humor!! What else do you want??
Me, straight hair, will kill for a hair like yours. Even if I’m happy with my hair, I find nice curly hair very
sexy. I remember myself when I was a teen asking my grandmum to curly my hair when i had a party!!
    About the other questions….

-You’re french, don’t you? Then, keep eating like french!!! Juices are good for breakfast….

-Yes, you can stop smoking in a sec. I did. But I was preparing my mind for that moment. I set a deadline. 3 weeks before, everyday, every time I smoked a cigarrete a said to myself: day D, I’ll STOP.
And day D I woke up, I had my cofee and when I was ready for the first cigarrette of the day… I took the pack of cigarrtes and threw it in the trash. That was 8 1/2 years ago. (I used to smoke 2 packs a day!)

    Have a great week!!,

  • Malibu PR Gal January, 28 2013, 10:21 / Reply

Juicing is a way of life here in Malibu – however, my family is French ( I was born in the US and grew up in So. Cal – mom is now back in Avignon ) – so that doesn’t work with my DNA : )

The $400 sneaker thing I agree with. It’s Converse and Havianas flip flops here. White and black respectively.

Can’t wait to see your fashion week wardrobe and coverage! Also, congrats on whittling down on the cigarettes!

LOVE your Stella video – and in true So. Cal/Malibu rock n roll fashion, I somehow believe there was a little Kurt Cobain/Nirvana inspiration in Stella’s 2013 collection:

  • Gabrielle January, 28 2013, 10:23 / Reply

-The juice: I don’t believe in that, how can that be good, we have teeth after all and if we eat healthy every day that does the trick much better than eating crap and then juice and eat crap again. But well I once tried it…. for one day and in the evening I eat so much chocolate that it came out of my ears….
-A simple pair of white sneakers for 400 dollars, well, too much, way too much, Adidas and Converse do it for much less.
    - When my best friend is wearing something I like a lot, I ask her and I buy it, she does the same the other way around and we are both happy with that. I think really good friends are happy when you are.
    - A new wardrobe in one week, well if I had the budget and some spare time I could totally do that, no problem, ha, I’d love to do that!!!
    - Stop smoking in one second, I tried and I failed and then I tried again with patches and all the stuff and then it worked and I’m smoke free since 6 years! You are almost done Garance! Keep going! Yay!
    - Trampoline sounds like a lot of fun :-) with at least two sport bras you should be fine, haha.
    - Save the money for the curling iron and buy a sport bra ;-)

Juicing has always seemed to crazy to me. I like the idea of including them, but not LIVING off of them. I just love eating too much to deprive myself of that simple, essential pleasure. Besides, why can’t you use those ingredients to make a meal you can actually chew?

Concentrate only on the wardrobe problem. Then you can make it in one week.

Ohh!! It’s so good that you mention the electronic cigarettes!! I don’t smoke but boyfriend used to smoke just 1 or 2 per day but, you know how picky we end up being (I mean, the non smokers) so the smell and all that… I never quite get used to it. But the best solution ever arrived, e-cigarettes!!! They are amaizing!! The smell is even.., actually…good!! like caramel or something nice and the vapor just disapears instantly. I love them so much that I actually tried myself without nicotine, just flavours like grape or coffee…it’s nice!
Anyway, I think every smoker should change to them because they are healthier. No combustion, no tar or disgusting additives, just the nicotine which so far hasn’t proved to cause any major dissease.
Ok, this is the best brand that the super deep and extend boyfriend’s research came up with. It’s an american brand but we live in London so he orders online:

    The model is: Volt automatic

Good luck with the process of giving up!!! And actually, they are very stylish….I love the black one, it makes me feel like a lady in a 40s glam party haha…yes, smoking grape but who knows it???

    Un besazo guapa!

  • Lizz DeLera January, 28 2013, 10:34 / Reply

    Deeeeearesst Garance,

first: congratulations! you have now assimilated so well into american society that…you’re worrying neurotically about all the things that american women do. ha ha ha ha (xxx! just being funny, of course.)

ok. don’t run off the Amtrak rails before fashion week. easier said than done, right?

first….don’t try ‘juice torture’ when you are needing energy and have a whirlwind trip of work ahead of you. i used to try that in my 20′s and it’s just another thing to torture yourself with and become preoccupied about. don’t succumb to fashionista peer pressure ;)

second…not sure what to say about the electronic cigarette…i have seen people on TV with them and they look a bit strange…so maybe for fashion week coming up…you just stick to your “down to 1 or 2 a day” and not pile up (more) stressful things on yourself… til’ after it’s all over. fair enough?

third…i think it’s ok to maybe buy the sneakers in another color; but probably too awkward if you see that friend mentioned very often. if you don’t see her much, then maybe ok; but if you see her a lot and you HAVE to have them…get another color. she probably secretly feels she was unique in picking them…and even if it’s flattering that you love her style in them-you know, women get a little weird about that :-P

fourth…FANTASTIQUE about your closet! well done. easier to pack & think with a more organized closet. For the “nothing to wear” dilemma…could be overwhelming, BUT: maybe you target out 3-5 places that you love and return to often (say, maybe 3 fav design labels, and 2 fav ‘basics’ and then throw in one fantastic vintage place for a cool coat or something. Use one day to target them like a military mission operation. Take Scott for the “VOICE OF REASON” :) and *only go to those places. You’ll have a cohesive assortment and won’t get overwhelmed in a city of too many choices! Then if some of them have nothing that works, you do the same plan -different day, with different specific targets. So you don’t get off track & get too exhausted.

fifth…i vote you resign yourself to a very cool new curly style for fashion week. Almost like you’re “debuting” a new look. Instead of dragging the tool cemetery with you…go the opposite, and bring styling products to bring out the natural cool curls, and ROCK that style like you mean it! If you must have straight hair while you’re in Paris…could you maybe just for one day slip in a blow out somewhere? If there is any time at all?

So…basically…remove and distill all the things that NYC and fashion tend to overwhelm you with (i know, i lived there) and instead focus on the cool you… that has become your brand. ;)

  • Katarina January, 28 2013, 10:34

Lizz, I loved your advice so much, that I googled your name and found your fantastic page. :) The art of the accidental, lovely! It just connects with my love of serendipity! Keep it going!
Garance, ah, you already know your way to cool to be true! ;)

If you would ask me now I would never buy a pair of white sneakers for $ 400,- but..! When you fall in love you fall in love. Problem for me, I can’t afford $ 400,- sneakers so I start searching the whole internet and stores for the perfect knock offs (and I mean absolutely perfect!). Not that nice to the designer who created them in the first place, but I comfort myself with the fact he shouldn’t have made them so expensive. Or at least a bitt more affordable when they are seriously that simple ;) And the “nothing to wear crisis” after a huge closet clean out. I take everything out, keep on matching with a list besides me and at the end of the day I have a list with all the items I need to complete my closet and outfits! Can’t wait to see your looks during fashion week! xx

Oh my Dear…. it’s a lot of problems to solve! ;-) as for eating….. i love eating and I wouldn’t be able to survive only on juice… and i am opposed to the idea of non-eating (maybe eating less or more thoughtfull) but! if you think about your body and what you eat – do food intolerance test (i don’t want to suggest any brand here, just read about it on the internetzzzz). And then you may be suprised that non eating one, two stupid things (and eating a lot of other delicious things ;-) after a week or two will sovle the problem of big belly, or other problems that are not to be spoken aloud ;-)

I have just one answer: you should try the trampoline class!!! I’m the laziest person on Earth but I went to trampoline class a whole semester!! When I was at the University I spent a year in Germany as an exchange student, and since I was like a Cabbage Patch Kid in a Barbie world, I decided to become a sporty German girl so I signed up for lost of sport classes, trampoline among them. A week after my big decision I gave up everything but the trampoline!! Anyway, I was the worst at it. After dozens of classes I still couldn’t turn around nor do any trick because I was laughing all the time, but like crying and having problems to breath!!! It was sooooooooooooooooo funny. I made a fool of myself the whole time, didn’t understand a word my Kazak teacher said but it was great. You should totally try it.

  • Kimmy January, 28 2013, 10:45 / Reply

Here goes…I did the juice for one whole week. I made my own juices (aka – my very patient husband made them for me) and that seemed to help a bit – seeing that real food was in the juice and being able to see that you were actually “eating” a lot of different things. When you need to chew, some celery is a great snack and though I think it is technically cheating, no one is grading you on how close you stay to the “curriculum”. I do think its okay to buy $400 white sneakers, because if you are a heels-girl, you will probably only buy one pair for the rest of your life, if you get a pair that you don’t love, you will buy six or seven $100 pairs in search of the look that you were going for with the $400. Net, net – you will spend less money buying the pair you wanted in the first place. You can probably make a new wardrobe in a week, but a more easily-made transition would be to clean your entire closet out in a week and make a list of missing pieces you need to add – a perfect white shirt, skinny jeans, a trench, black sweater, etc, and then hit the shops list-in-hand and try not to digress. I don’t smoke, so I can’t help here! Yes to the trampoline class…for the best sports bra – look to Natori (you can get it at Linda’s on the UES) – you wont even need to layer (I wear a DD and so you just need to trust me!) . Skip buying the new curling iron, you will use it once and it will end up in your fancy electronics cemetery with the others! Good luck! xo, ks

I used to juice fast in high school and in my early 20s (am in my early 30s now) and now they wreak havoc on my blood sugar levels. Not enough fibre to slow the absorption of sugars and not enough protein to keep me healthy. As for smoking, I quit in a second some years ago. Smoking is so self-destructive and self-hating. It was the easest thing I ever gave up. The thought of a trampoline makes my boobs hurt!! Triple sports bra! I would loooove to try a class. Go for the sneakers!

Juice fasts: no, better to eat vegetables and a little fruit. Juices lose all the fibre and fruit juice is both sugary & acidic. You need protein with each meal to keep your energy even and protect your skin, hair & nails

Nothing to wear: Congratulations on your clear out, now take all your knowledge of the new trends, add it to your knowledge of your figure & lifestyle then buy a few wonderful pieces to take you through the spring.

$400 white sneakers: I wouldn’t myself it’s hard to see how a white sneaker can be that perfect, but better buy them rather than spend as much on several pairs which aren’t quite right

Trampoline: I loved this but now have bursitis in my feet which is painful, so not everyday & make sure you wear shoes with a very inflexible sole

Smoking: just stop, please. My beloved mother smoked a lot when young (before they knew). She now has COPD and can’t do things she really wants to because her breathing is so bad. Sometimes her lungs squeak, the wheezing is so bad. there is no cure, just lots of inhalers, the possibility of having bits of her lungs cut out & ending up on a ventilator.

  • Dariann January, 28 2013, 11:31 / Reply

Fresh vegetable juice is wonderful & healing. The flavor grows on you, and when you think about the amazing things it does for your skin, your vital organs, and your waistline, it’s worth the momentary discomfort of not enjoying solid food. I do an annual 10-day juice fast and it helps me hit the reset button on cravings, stubborn fat, unhappy skin…you name it. You go spend however much money you want on whatever it is you truly want because you’ve earned it. If that something is a pair of $999 flip-flops, then dammit you go get them! You shouldn’t feel the need to explain your purchase to your friend either…she should feel flattered you copied her! Yes, it’s possible to quit smoking cold turkey, because I did it 7 years ago & never looked back. There will come a time when it sinks in for you how extremely gross smoking is and you’ll think: “What the hell was I thinking??” You’ll even look at people smoking and wish for them the same triumph you had. As for fashion week, I suggest you buy one spectacular piece and wear it every day with something else you already have in your closet. Make that piece your fashion week hero and then feature it on the blog so that everyone copies you. I don’t know anything about trampolines, but I imagine you need a sturdy bra…maybe some duct tape even if your girls are larger than a C cup. And since I’m a hairstylist, the last one hits home for me: if you know you won’t use the iron then don’t buy it–instead visit your stylist so he/she can work their magic on you and pamper you. That being said, I do wish you’d wear your hair down more often though. It’s so pretty and the wilder it looks the more stylish and fantastic you will look! Pull a Coddington…frizz never stopped her from her fashion life. Lastly, I enjoy your blog so much! I’m just sayin’ :)

Je me trompe ?

**juicing is only good if you juice veggies and fruit yourself…don’t buy bottled juices, even sitting for a little while diminishes their nutrition. have some great recipes that really satisfy you, based on their vitamin combining. that makes all the difference when juicing and hunger.

** $400 for white sneakers? money is only a number. if you love them, get them…personally, i couldn’t do it cause i don’t really like white sneakers…but i can easily spend $400 on anything i really want/like…btw, friend might not like/but take as compliment.

**wardrobe in one week…hell i can put one together in 1 hour…just depends on how much money you have…time is not an issue…make style, not war.

**smoking? i believe in individual freedom. smoke if you want. accept responsibility for your health.

**trampoline class? only thing i thought when you wrote this is that you really are becoming american! latest fitness craze—eeeee! wear 2 sports bras.

    **curling iron, just say no…

Yes, it’s ok to buy the same white sneakers as your friend and I say this because I own the same work bag (not a briefcase, not a handbag) as an amie of mine!!

Firstly, they are white sneakers so while I’m sure they’re very special, they are kind of a ubiquitous item, so that gives you room to manoeuvre (alas my shared work bag does not quite fit this description!). Secondly, she will be excited that you admire her style enough to want to own the same pair.

However, you should definitely ask her before buying. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

And I bet she reads your blog, so now she knows you love them regardless of what you do!!!

It is too cold for a juice fast.

In Chinese medicine, they would say do juice fast only when it gets warmer otherwise you can catch cold or bloat! Be careful x

  • Minelle Mir January, 28 2013, 1:03 / Reply

    You post made me smile.
    Here’s my reply, kinda brief:

    1. Juice- Nope, no, and nuh-uh. I’ve tried and failed and tortured everyone around me with my grumpiness. I like mine with toast. Props for trying though, I couldn’t last an hour.

    2. Sneakers: Totally ok. I’ve been guilty of a Marant or two. (GSPD- my term for genetic shoe purchasing dysfunction.)

3.White runners always remind me of nurses in hospitals and a vomtastic Boney M video from circa..a long time ago. Not a fan. Just saying.

    4. Wardrobe in one week: Very possible. You get creative when you have less, at least I’ve convinced myself. Accessories..whole other story.

    5. Smoking. It takes time. My fab pal is undergoing the surgical removal of the cigarette from in-between her fingers. Not fun but she’s got mean friends that send her grotesque images of blackened lungs. Ah inspiration.

    6. Trampoline: Super fun as long as the ceilings are high.

    7. Sports Bra’s: If they’re going to pop out, nothing can stop them. Boobs have a mind of their own sometimes.

    8. I know nothing about curling irons except that I once burnt my neck with one when I was 12 and my mom punished me thinking it was a hickey.

  • Lavang January, 28 2013, 1:07 / Reply

I smoked for almost ten years, and thought nothing could stop my habit… Until I started training for my first half marathon. I also never really ran much before this, as I signed up just because I watched my boyfriend finish one the year prior, and I thought to myself that I’d like to accomplish something like that! Well, after two miles of my first training, I couldn’t breathe and was (excuse the pas elegance of this) coughing up grossness uncontrollably. So I decided I needed to cut back slowly if I was going to ever finish more than five miles, let alone a half marathon. So after four months of that and running, I finished two half marathons and said goodbye to cigarettes!

I don’t suggest you go train for a half marathon, but just saying that quitting will make you feel loads better! And on a slightly superficial note, my skin drastically improved since I quit smoking. Less breakouts, dryness, and irritation.

    Great post!

Re: new wardrobe. I moved last year and gave away almost all of my clothes – I kept the special pieces and the everyday pieces that were in very good shape. Since then I told myself I could only buy one or two pieces here and there, forcing myself to get crafty with the new pieces and the old pieces. I’ve found that I’ve created some great outfits this way, and I’ve had much more fun looking for one or two things at a time that really jump out at me. My wardrobe is now filled only with things that I really love.

    Bonjour Garance!

Juice diet – doesn’t sound like a great idea, fruit juice has loads of natural sugar in that will send your blood sugar up and down like crazy so you will get that super high – grumpy low feeling. Here are some yummy healthy recipes if yo fancy an alternative ( the trick is to add protein to everything to keep your blood sugar stable)

    http://amy-rose89.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/lunch.html (Chicken/Prawn Raman)
    http://amy-rose89.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/snacks.html (Peanut Butter Cupcakes)

The Sneakers – I have so had this before. What do you think they will give you that you don’t already have? Can you get it another way? Do you really need it? For me Silk Dressing Gown = Super Glamorous Amy swaning round super glamorously. Reality is I will still be half awake and spill my breakfast everywhere. Lesson; you don’t have to be perfect all the time, stick with the fluffy one!

Yes, you and your friend will style them differently so you won’t look the same, so don’t worry about that :)

Wardrobe – Yes. You still have your classic basics, that is why they are your basics, right? So get a few more directional/standout pieces but limit it to 1 new item per day of fashion week, and put them with your basics, then you won’t break the bank but you’ll feel good!

Smoking – Maybe you can, but the point is, you are heading the right way, so good for you! Keep going but don’t beat yourself up if it doesn’t work right away.

Trampolining – sounds awesome try it once at least!

Hair – Go back to hairdresser. Ask them to show you how to do it and try it yourself. If you can and it works, go ahead! If not, save it for when they can do it for you.

Hope that helps, enjoying the weekly update!

    Amy xxx

….edit of my comment above…. the new wardrobe question: I’d get a Stella suit in navy and this awesome Miu Miu coat on sale at net-a-porter and the green Tibi skirt and some new Equipment blouses and this awesome but simple Helmut Lang dress and…. Well my Wishlist is long…. haha :-)

  • Camous January, 28 2013, 1:51 / Reply

Ah j’aime bien cet article ça me fait sourire!

    On Juice:

I’ve only done a cleansing fast once; it was less intense then a straight juice fast but lasted 10 days and made me cry. The trick was to do it with friends who lived all over the country. That way at at hour three, you can have someone to discuss the insanity of juicing, how much you hate it, and then why you must carry on. It was nice to have more than one friend because we would check up on each other randomly. My partner was not participating, so having other people to talk to about the experience was important. Also my friends helped me from killing him when he was making delicious coffee which is my drug of choice. Good luck. It feels great when you make it through and totally makes you appreciate all the delicious things in this world.

And I have been thinking about juicing for a long time which I will give it a try as soon as I recover from a terrible flu that I haver for over 2 weeks! :( sad and fed up actually!!!
Not sure if I will be strong enough to last a week….but it’s definitely worth the try ! cleanse cleanse cleanse! that’s my philosophy at this time around.

Orange (or any tropical) juice when drunk too much in ‘cold winter regions’ (cold clima) will distroy your organs and will cause block their natural chemistry. It is good to apply some wisdome and knowledge from natural nutrition for various clima. So, be careful with “just orange juice in winter’.

I just started the “master cleanse” today (lemon juice, cayenne and maple syrup mixed in water)… I am supposed to go ten days, I shortened it to end this Sunday… but I am starved!! Should I go on?! I have never done a cleanse before… and I have tried the Blueprint juices but I didn’t like that either…

Trampoline – yes! But to a class? Queer…. I watch and jump to Tracy Anderson’s trampoline videos in the privacy of my own apartment…. with her videos you’re not jumping like crazy so I only wear one sports bra despite my being ***large***

Smoking – yes you can… but you’ll find yourself cheating the next day. The entire “oh I’ll only smoke two a day” never works / is not solving the issue. You have to stop at once!

I just edited out my closet – where is the fun in building a new wardrobe in a week? How will you be able to fly to all of the places where you get each little staple from? And where is the real fun in shopping for only one week?! Your closet will be über boring.

Trampolin class?? I am too old for this shit ;) No kidding, I am quite sporty and trained, but trampoline killed my back! …ok I was also a bit stupid, I admit, I landed on my knees, and that goes directly to your vertebrate, it was written in the instructions of the trampoline… please don’t tell me you read the instructions for trampolines! Take maybe a bit care of your back.

juice: warming up the juice a bit did the trick for me! and if I didn’t manage anymore, I eat a banana, or some dry fruit that would soak up all the unsatisfying liquid. The next day, I appreciate my food so much!

  • Jim January, 28 2013, 6:35 / Reply

Garance, juice-schmuice! This is nothing more than a trendy fad that fuels your cravings due to blood sugar spikes. I watched a documentary once where the subject’s blood & liver function was monitored during a week of juice fasting and it actually left their liver in a poorer state than it was prior to the detox. Juicing also removes most of the fibre, you’re better off just eating the whole fruit or veg. Ditch diets & unnecessary detox. If you feel you’ve over indulged, simply decrease or eliminate any extra sugar in the form of confectionary and low GI carbohydrates such as white bread, alcohol & salty snacks. Increase your protein portions to stabilise your insulin levels, introduce whole grains & good fats (I have 2 semi-hard boiled eggs on wholegrain toast with half an avocado every morning) fruit as a snack mid-morning and up your veggies for lunch and dinner, I guarantee you will have boundless energy & feel wonderful. I can only speak from personal experience but I honestly feel that sugar is our greatest enemy, I lost 7 kg in six months by doing nothing more than eliminating cakes, biscuits, chocolates, white bread & desserts. Granted this calls for patience & discipline but after ten days without sugar, the cravings disappear…the trick is not to allow yourself to get to the point where you’re starving, so regular healthy snacks (yoghurt, peanut or almond butter is your friend) help. Start looking at sugar content, not fat on food labels in fact, avoid low fat anything & starving yourself with fads like juicing!

And quit smoking! From 2 to 0, should be no problem?!?
Lots of love from Arnhem, Holland…..

  • Performance and Cocktails January, 28 2013, 7:13 / Reply

Maybe somebody already commented this – I had no time to read them all!

Eating the actual fruit or vegetables is more filling than making the juice.

Most fruit and fruit juice is pretty high in sugar and triggers insulin production, which allegedly makes you crash your energy, and also encourages the deposition of fat.

So I don’t believe in juicing!!

Green tea is supposed to be a natural appetite suppressant.

I don’t do any diet supplements based on stimulants. I think that is really bad for you.

Some say you should eat like a king, lunch like a lord, eat dinner like a peasant. A big breakfast with protein fills you up and provides energy for the day. Personally I can’t do like that – I would wake up hungry at night. So if I really need to lose weight fast (e.g. 5 – 6 lb) here’s what I do.

Drink a big mug of decaff black tea when I get up.
Drink decaff green tea through the day. If I have fruit juice I dilute it with club soda. You get used to the less sugary taste after a while – like you get used to candy with less sugar in Japan. The club soda helps to feel full.
Eat a pound of carrots and a couple of pieces of fruit during the day, or make vegetable soup. East a normal size, balanced dinner, mostly protein, carb and veggies, not a lot of fat.
This is not sustainable long term, but my weight stays constant on a normal breakfast/lunch/dinner IF I have time to exercise. If due to work or travel I can’t get time to exercise, then I put on weight, and then I do the above for a short time.

Eight questions, 8 answers (from my POV):
    1. Not if you are expected to be pleasant all day
    2. Yes
    3. NO!
    4. Of course. Why didn’t you give us anything? ;)
    5. YES!
    6. Jump to it!
    7. 2
    8. Sighs, my curly hair wishes for a Ricky’s in L.A… That would make me go broke.

About the juicing, why are there are so many juice haters? My husband and I got a juicer for New Years and love it. With that said, if we tried to juice all day we’d look emaciated (we had this discussion over burgers and beer on Saturday, so I’m probably not the best judge…). In your post today, so many (excellent) questions – so many responses… so I’ll start with the easier ones first.

Please give it up immediately and forever to let your body live more richly, and not further burden the toxic load of the people around you who may not be able to walk away when you smoke. My grandmother, who lived with our family for twenty years until she passed away, smoked three packets daily for forty years. At sixty years of age, she gave up – cold-turkey: the only side effects were amazing skin in a month, more luscious hair in five months, increased lung capacity in two months, and increased sensitivity to taste after just one week… no withdrawal symptoms. As for my grandmother – the same could also be said of her :-)

    Juicing Diets?
Great for a day or so, as it allows the stomach to rest… However, the lack of protein is a concern – especially if you are run-down. The human body needs protein for muscle building and muscle maintenance… and to feel energetic. Many people get excited when they feel good after a week on juices alone – this is temporary, and not ideal if you have a high-energy out-put everyday, as many of us would. Juicing is also best for warm months, and not winter/autumn. Also, please keep in mind that while juicing vegetables works positively to help relieve the stomach in a low GI-non-energy-spiking-and-crashing way for a day, juicing fruit doesn’t work. This is because all the sugar in the fruit plus the juicing transforms the normally healthy low-GI solid fruit into a soupy, high-GI, sugar-spiking-insulin inducing liquid. Some people who can’t tolerate eating raw vegetables or having so much raw vegetable juice, do better on a one day low-stomach stress diet of clear vegetable soup for the whole day, then adding the vegetables and a little potato at night at dinner time. Any diet that excludes huge families of food for more than a day – unless you are undergoing a specific low-allergy/elimination diet – is a no-no… any cleansing diet should always include all the colours of the rainbow in your vegetable selection either part-way through – or at the end of the day. We were born with teeth and a big mouth! This is because the chewing process is essential in releasing certain elements in the mouth that mixes with the saliva, and inducing some of the processes vital to aid our absorption of our meal’s vitamins and minerals. Vegetable juicing is probably good for a day or so… and then return to a healthy abundance of solid vegetables with a (cupped) palm-sized serving of protein (veg or meat sourced) for your meals, and a (cupped) palm-sized quantity of carbohydrate, with little treats here and there as your body feels like it.

    Wardrobe in a week?
Totally possible, if it’s you, Garance :-) And, throwing out and selling so much of your present wardrobe has already provided you with a new wardrobe.

Sneakers at $400, which are the same as your friend’s?
If you can afford the white sneakers and you love them and want to wear them, purchase them! Some suggest the politeness of asking your friend first, which is lovely. Shoes/sneakers/clothes that are not haute couture can definitely be bought by good friends. When someone compliments me on an item I am wearing that day, I always give them the details of the garment/bag/shoe/jewelry, as well as where I bought it – and where I saw it for cheaper! No one has a patent on those white sneakers you adore (except the company who made them… and even then, with a little tweak here and there…), so go for it! My dear friend and I only catch up four times a year… but when we do, we discover that we often wear similar items, or that we’ve independently bought the same thing… and this is while she wears all brand-new, and I only wear vintage! However, we inevitably style things differently. So, the fun-part/double-headed snake of any item not made-to-order by a completely “original” designer” is, it’s not really possible to be totally individual unless you design and sew all your own clothes yourself… and even then, unless you print the material yourself, you’ll still never be the only one to wear that item…. AND the item will look different on you and your friend, because you will style things differently. Buy the white sneakers, Garance – your friend will understand, and you’ll be able to finally get a good night’s sleep.

Really effective – like a few of the other ladies have noted – for improving your lymphatic drainage and improving your immunity. Be sure to check that the trampoline you buy is strong and that the springs won’t suddenly pop off, leaving you with severe injuries when you fall off! And, if you have a bad back/slipped back or neck disc, trampolining will only aggravate your condition. Gentle daily walking and swimming, followed by a lymphatic drainage massage by a reputable therapist are good, in the event your body does not allow you to do trampolining.

    Trampolining Bra:
Wear whatever you need – some people layer two, others wear just one technology heavy one… you know you’re wearing the right bra(s) when you jump and your don’t feel like your breasts are hurting from the gravity.

    Curling Iron:
No need; you are gorgeous every way you are – and however your hair is.

You should do a whole post on the electronic cigarette.
They are quite a thing here in France right now.
Its interesting how they are held in a different way from the traditional cigarettes.

Especially in the winter i see people walking , quickly put their entire fist to their mouth and exhale steam. It makes you do a double-take.

    Molti Baci!

What about the ‘Comme des Garçons” white runners? They look really cute and appear to have a little personality! Oh Dear……. I think I’m talking myself around!

  • Sabaa January, 29 2013, 7:24 / Reply

I stopped smoking in one second 3 times, first two I failed, but 3rd was the charm. First two weeks were pretty hard, but after that it was much easier. Few times I forgot I stopped, and I caught myself frantically looking for my cigarettes, only to realize; I don’t smoke any more.

    Bonjour Garance!

YES to juicing! I just finished 10 day juice detox yesterday, but I will continue to juice until I run out of all my vegetables. I’m 41 years old – 5’3 and was 120 lbs. I have lost 6 pounds total. I exercised during juicing because I was BURSTING with energy, and cooking for my family of 5 with no problems. Juicing has really changed my bad eating habit from the holidays. Now my clothes fit better!

  • Newborn Fanatic January, 29 2013, 4:05 / Reply

haha so many questions! you’re so cute Garance~
Yes it’s possible to drink only juice the whole day..but be prepared to feel lifeless. :P
I wouldn’t spend so much money on plain white sneakers unless there was some special cool awesome amazing omfg design to it.
I think it’s fine to wear the same sneakers as your friend. Just compliment and tell her how much you like it. Whenever people compliment any of my footwear i always tell them where i got it so they can get it too if they want.
Yes! you can quit smoking! I quit cold turkey about 4-5 years ago!

  • Ilda January, 29 2013, 5:26 / Reply

My boyfriend stopped smoking in one second, when he discovered electronic cigarettes.
He actually was so excited and passionate about the new find that he decided to start his own business.
Now he is very successful making the liquid that goes into the e-cigarette. On his website you can custom make your own liquid and even choose no nicotine.

    Outside the e-cig topic…
~ I love your style Garance and your writing is brilliant.

Of Course! I think…

Of Course! L’equilibre…
But there’s a plan B… Quant on se dit F*** IT !

Of Course!
Et 3 semaines ‘in the grand scale of things and of life itself– c’est vraiment infime…

GO GO GO!

Lemme guess. You want the Margiela sneakers, don’t you? Am I psychic, or what? :)

GARANCE! Drinking juice all day with no food is not healthy. It’s eating disordered! You have a special platform in fashion to communicate a message of woman love and joy in beautiful things. It’s why I have always loved your blog. Be careful not to spread the message of self-hatred that the rest of fashion sells.

    Dear Garance,

Yes, it is possible to quit smoking in a second. And you don’t even need a electronic one cause it is going to make you miss the normal cigarette. Just accept it in your head – you will only gain, ONLY GAIN.

Allen Carr’s Easy Way to stop smoking helped me quit in a second. Just read it!

I smoked for 6 years and now that I don’t I can honestly say this to people I care about (which obviously includes you ( I just realized how close I’ve grown to you by reading your blog)) – you will be better without it :)

  • Sandra February, 3 2013, 1:30 / Reply

hello Garance. Work with your hair as it is naturally; it’s the best, and easiest way to go! …and, ultimately, always the most flattering. In brief, leave your lovely locks alone, and glory in your own, very unique, waves and curls!
