Fashion week is in full swing in New York. It’s fashion tiiiiime!!! Yahoooo! Camera flash! Stilettos!!!
Okay. Don’t you go forgetting that we are creatures of intellect and reason.
We’re aren’t only defined by our sublimity and perfect outfits, no. (Yes yes yes, I’m talking about all of you and me, of course, of course!)
We are thinking beings as well. We intellectualize.
So that’s why it’s high time we answered to the…. Big Questions of Fashion Week.
Drum roll please…

Is one well dressed if she is dressed in winter as she would be in summer?

Let me explain. Let’s just say, for example, that we’re in New York during fashion week and, again, hypothetically, there’s a blizzard named Nemo that just hit the city the day before.
There are mountains of snow on all the sidewalks and frozen puddles everywhere rivaling March of the Penguins. A freezing wind sweeps down the avenues like a tunnel and there you are in your little sandals with your toes poking out and a short skirt with your shirt open half way down your chest.
You have to be carried to go over puddles and you live in constant fear of death by black ice.
Your outfit would be perfect if it were August, but even my neighbor’s bulldog is more covered up than you (it’s wearing mini-boots)(just looking at your frozen feet makes it cold).

Yet there you are, shivering for the photographers.

So I’m wondering, even if you’re really well dressed… Are you really well dressed? Or does it just totally miss the mark? Is a stylish outfit always a stylish outfit no matter the context, or should one dress according to the circumstances?

What’s this supposed to mean on the Phillip Lim invite? Who’s this Sono Mama?

Here’s what Phillip explained at the show… Sono Mama, in Japanese, means “stay as you are.” I like that thought!

Oh, by the way, here is a little video I caught of Susie interviewing Phillip after the show.

What are we going to be wearing next winter?

Yep! I found a trend!!!

We’re going to wear heavy boots with really short skirts.
Today already I saw it at Phillip Lim (love him forever) and Theyskens (really good show ! I’ll post about it ASAP).

What does everyone talk about in the first row of the shows?
(or the second, or the third?)(Or in standing?)

“Do I look like a car ? I feel like look like a car!”
(Bryan Boy, not quite confidant about his outfit)

“When is this gonna end?”
(The magazine editors, talking about all the bloggers who now have seats at all the shows.)

“Want a ride? Come up in my car!!! Well actually it’s more like a Chinese mini-van. But China is trending!!!”
(My friend Daphné)

How to patch up a bruised ego?

Was your seat at a show just stolen from someone more important than you?
Did you just get yelled at by Rihanna’s bodyguards?
Did you just realize that your outfit is a total fail, just as you’re in the middle of talking to Emmanuelle Alt? (The Goddess of Coolitude)

Here’s a miraculous solution… Amnesia. Pure and simple.
I let it sink in for two seconds, think about what I can do so that next time, it doesn’t happen, and then I tell myself that there are moments in life that are out of my control. At the end of the day, they’re not going to change my life at all.

I don’t know if it’s because of situations like this (it happens every day with fashioooooon) that I’ve had to develop a thick skin (If it’s the case, then cool. Back in the day I would’ve dwelled on the thing for hours imagining all the possible responses I could have given. I know now that gets you nowhere. I’ll never have the perfect response.)
Or maybe it’s the meditating I did in January back when my New Year resolutions were in full force, helping me to distinguish which thoughts were worth my time and which ones don’t deserve any energy.

Whatever it is, let’s hear it for selective memory!!!

Why are flash photos not allowed at Marc Jacobs?
What’s the set going to look like? What’s the show going to look like?

What are they going to do if the flash on my phone goes off accidentally like it so often does?

And a follow up question:
Have you figured out a tecnhique to not get blurry photos of the shows or anything in motion? Please? I can’t figure it out and I need to be able to share my profound comments on Instagram…

Being well dressed is a combination of style, but it also has to be a tad practical. You look foolish in peep toe stilletos if there’s a blizzard in town, Hello! You’re asking a very good question Garance! Love your drawings by the way :-)

Honey, if you haven’t figured out how to shoot non-blurry runway (or motion) shots yet, what hope is there for the rest of us? And isn’t that what Scott is for? I mean…

No, one is not well dressed if she has to be carried over puddles!! One should wear heavy boots and a short skirt … and warm tights! ;)

Love this post. I’m absolutely going to work on my amnesia response! It’s the only way … moving on is so much better than dwelling on something that can’t be controlled or is already past. It’s usually not as bad as you think it is, anyway. Case in point – I seriously doubt your outfit was a total fail! But you did make me laugh, thanks!

Thank you for that first question! I agree with Olivia’s response above–style out of context is not stylish at all, it’s ridiculous! The most obvious symptom of “fashion victimitis.” I’ve been astonished by some of the ensembles worn by one blogger–let’s call her The Redhead Sidedish–whose ensembles are more appropriate for June, than even a mild February day in NYC, much less a blizzard.

No, that is not well dressed at all. That is trying too hard and ridiculous. Although even in summer I prefer more modesty.

About your photos though. Large aperture lens on a camera capable of higher ISO without too much graininess. also maybe you can use a bean bag for stability. If I find one I’ll post a link

Love your illustrations! And I agree totally, having a selective memory is a vital step towards happiness, happiness is a choice, most of the time.
And if you ask me, freezing in a summer outfit in the middle of winter is stupid, sorry to say. The picture of Jenna Lyons you showed us is proof that you can look very stylish in a weather appropriate outfit. A big part of the fun of fashion is the changing seasons, every autumn I crave cozy knits and warm coats and I really look forward to wear all my winter clothes and then towards spring…. yay! the first warm day, when you go barefoot in your favorite summer sandals, I love these moments!
And I really wonder…. what was Bryan wearing? xxx

  • Alice February, 12 2013, 10:34 / Reply

I think wearing seasonally inappropriate clothes is the ultimate ‘trying too hard.’ Everyone knows you can’t possibly be even close to comfortable! I also think it is likely a tactic done by people who are quite insecure and want to make an impression a little too much, or who haven’t ‘made it’ and also want to make an impression.

i think one is the most well-dressed when you can figure out how to still look cool under the circumstances and **for the circumstances, like the cold or the rain. nothing seems or looks more ridiculous than seeing someone who is helpless against the elements and can’t navigate their surroundings -you can still do it with style, and you do ;)

as for the blurry thing…i wish i knew; i once (about 6 yrs ago) bought a pretty expensive little point and shoot camera while in Hong Kong (it was a Fuji Finepix but a sleek little model that was not made nor available in the States, and it ROCKED) and that thing would seriously freeze anything that dared to move on its formidable littlescreen.

but, alas, it was stolen in transit once i got back to the States. how upsetting. :(

  • Olimpia Liberti February, 12 2013, 10:49 / Reply

    Love love loooove your illustrations!
And replying to your question, I believe that a stylish outfit is only stylish when worn according to the circumstances. An elegant and well dressed woman is the one who knows where, when and how to wear it.

I questioned the same thing on one of Scott’s posts a while back, where everyone seemed to be praising how ‘unexpected’ a girl’s bare legs looked in the middle of winter. In this situation, I can’t think of how good someone looks, I just think about how cold or uncomfortable they must be. I’m going to sound like a jerk, because of course fashion is at times NOT about comfort, but when one’s battling -10 weather in spring clothes, doesn’t the appeal just get overshadowed by the vanity? Living in Toronto, also post snowstorm, I really think you can dress well for the elements.

  • Emilie February, 12 2013, 12:07 / Reply

I remember watching an interview with a style icon/actress from the 60s (I don’t remember who but probably along the lines of Grace Kelly) and they asked what’s the first thing she does to dress stylishly and she said:”look at the weather”. I live by that.

A summer outfit in winter is totally not cool. You can’t be good at fashion, good at dressing yourself if you can’t dress for the weather. After all, that’s what clothes are really for. If you have a good dress sense you can dress for any occassion, any weather and still look chic. It’s hard, but that’s half the fun!

It doesn’t seem fashionable to dress under the weather, you risk looking foolish. I own enough clothes to be fashionable no matter what the temperature. Yesterday I wore a fur-lined leather Nurten Ceylan jacket with big chinchilla collar, cuffs and trim around the hem, a lavender and brown knitted scarf, greige leggings and brown calf-high boots and a sleeveless brown wool shell. When I took the coat off I was perfectly suited for the inside and when I was outside I was perfectly suited for the outside.

Dressing stylishly, for me, always references the environment in which one is been stylish in. I love to see a woman, on a frigid winter’s day, wearing some cool yet warm wool coat, some funky yet warm hat and a pair of groovy, slush-defying boots. My admiration of her style always includes the fact that she looks at ease and warm whilst scaling that three foot bank of snow.

P.S. Dying to know what Ms. Alt was wearing!
